How do i change the registered cat owner with identichip?

Its a long story, but my 2yr cat lived with my ex boyfriend's mum for the first few months and so was registered with her on the identichip, she came to live with us aged about 5months and when me and the ex broke up at the start of this year she stayed with me. Its only recently occurred to me that she's still registered to his mum so i want to change it but for obvious reasons i am not in contact with her, can i change the owner details without having to contact her?How do i change the registered cat owner with identichip?

try asking the vet who chipped her to get the details and ring them
As far as I know it's just on a database and I imagine you can get it changed quite easily - just call up your vet.
You cannot change the information that is transmitted by the chip when it is scanned. That is permanent. But that is only a number that identifies the company that issued the number along with a serial number. That serial number cross references to a file at the issuing company and that is where the ownership information is actually stored.

What you need, therefore, is the permission of the file holder to change the information. The only other way is to have the current chip removed from the cat but that requires (minor) surgery.
Many cats are turned over to animal control or the shelters and the new owners have no idea who the old owners were. Just call the chip company that has the information and update it.
